A mandatory water conservation notice is in effect for parts of Lancaster and Chester counties in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania American Water is urging approximately 23,000 customers to reduce their water usage by 10 to 15% due to recent severe weather that has impacted local water sources. These weather-related challenges have increased demand on filtration systems and reduced treatment capacity, prompting the conservation request.

In Lancaster County, the affected areas include Christiana and Quarryville boroughs, as well as Bart, Colerain, Eden, and Sadsbury townships. The conservation notice is expected to expire tonight, but residents are encouraged to continue using water wisely.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently elevated the drought status in Berks and Lancaster counties from a Drought Watch to a Drought Warning. This decision was based on various indicators, including public water supply levels. Although the current water supply is adequate, Pennsylvania American Water is preparing for potentially more severe conditions.

Brandy Braun, director of water quality and environmental compliance, emphasized the importance of proactive measures. The company provides resources for water conservation on its website and offers a Water Use Calculator to help customers identify ways to save water and energy.
