Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to open up about the songs on her sophomore album GUTS. During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week, the Grammy winner revealed how her controversial song "Lacy" came to be.

The angsty song quickly became a fan favorite and there are many theories about who "Lacy" could be. Some fans think it could be Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, or Taylor Swift. For the first time, Rodrigo shared the unexpected origins of the song.

Referencing the outro of "Lacy" in which Rodrigo sings, "And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you," the singer-songwriter admitted, "Very emo of me, writing that."

She went on to tell Clarkson, “I took a poetry class at USC. I wrote a poem called ‘Lacy’ for one of the assignments, and I really liked it. I’m like, ‘I’m gonna turn it into a song!'”

Rodrigo has previously addressed the theories surrounding "Lacy." During her interview with the Los Angeles Times this month, the star says she appreciates when her fans have "more creative answers to who Lacy is." She added, "I just think it’s not classy to come out and say it’s about this person. I also think that would set a weird precedent where I’d have to clear the air with every song I write.”

Even before "Lacy" was released, fans were convinced the first single from GUTS, "Vampire," was about a rumored falling out with Taylor Swift. Rodrigo addressed the rumors in an interview with Rolling Stone, sharing a similar sentiment as her LA Times interview: "How do I answer this? I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing. I was very surprised when people thought that."
