Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling nearly 200,000 Outlander and Outlander plug-in hybrid electric SUVs due to a software issue affecting the rearview camera. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, the infotainment system in these vehicles, from model years 2022 to 2025, may freeze or display a black screen, potentially causing the rearview camera image to be lost while backing up. This malfunction increases the risk of a crash and makes the vehicles non-compliant with federal rear visibility regulations.
The recall affects over 198,900 vehicles, with the issue traced back to improper software programming. Mitsubishi announced the recall on June 2, 2025, as an expansion of a similar recall from May 2023. The previous recall, identified as 23V345, involved reprogramming the software. Vehicles repaired under the earlier recall will require the new software update.
Mitsubishi plans to notify dealers starting Monday (June 16), and vehicle owners will receive notification letters by the end of June. The letters will include instructions for taking vehicles to dealerships for a free software update. Owners seeking reimbursement for expenses related to the recall will find instructions in their notification letters on how to contact Mitsubishi's Customer Relations Department.
The recall, designated as 25V369000 by the NHTSA and SR-25-001 by Mitsubishi, has not resulted in any reported injuries or deaths. Mitsubishi encourages affected owners to contact any Mitsubishi Motors dealership to schedule the necessary software update.
