Mandy Moore Talks 'Controlling' Ex Ryan Adams In 'New York Times' Report

Ryan Adams is at the center of a new exposé from The New York Times, where seven women, including Mandy Moore, opened up about manipulative behavior and abuse they received from the singer/songwriter.

In the report, which was published on Wednesday (February 13), the This Is Us actress revealed that "music was a point of control" between the two stars, who wed in March 2009 and saw a filing for divorce in January 2015. In the exposé, Moore explained that Adams "discouraged" her from working with other managers and producers after the release of her sixth album, Amanda Leigh. But while they wrote songs together, he would reportedly "replace her with other female artists" when it came time to record. Moore described him as "psychologically abusive," admitting that he would always tell her that she wasn't a real musician because she didn't play an instrument. "His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s," she told the outlet.

After the exposé was published, Moore took to Instagram to sound off on her commentary in the piece, writing, "Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it’s always worth it. My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard. #sisterhoodforever." Meanwhile, Adams denied his ex-wife's claims via his lawyer, arguing that her "characterization" of their relationship is "completely inconsistent with his view."

Moore has previously spoken out about her marriage to Adams. "I didn't choose the right person," the star told Cosmopolitan in October. "I don't feel guilty for it. I don't fault myself for it. When people said, 'I'm sorry,' I was like, 'No. Sorry would have been had I stayed in a very unhealthy situation.' I didn't. I found my way out. And when I did, things opened back up again."
