FDA Warns Some Hand Sanitizers Can Be Harmful

Before you slap on some hand sanitizer next time you leave the grocery store, check the label.

The FDA says to check for methanol. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is used in antifreeze and in fuel production, and can be life threatening if ingested and toxic if absorbed through the skin. Ethanol on the other hand is safe for topical use. If your hand sanitizer contains methanol, don’t use it! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention warns that methanol exposure can cause nausea, headaches, dizziness, agitation, amnesia, coma, and seizures.
