Folks in Michigan got quite the show the other night. Not only did a meteor zipping through the sky give a spectacular light show, but an earthquake too. The U.S. Geological Survey says the meteor was seen at about 8:10 p.m. and caused a magnitude two earthquake centered in Macomb County. Sightings were reported all over the region, including Detroit, West Michigan, Chicago and northern Ohio, but most reports came from Southeast Michigan.
Bill Cooke from NASA’s meteoroid environment office in Alabama estimates the meteor was about one or two yards across, weighed more than one metric ton and traveled between 40 to 50 thousand miles to get to Earth.
Many residents say they heard an explosion after spotting the space rock. Video also shows it apparently bursting. It's not yet clear if the meteor actually hit the ground.
