Mandy Moore is back like a bolt from the blue with a brand new single.
On Tuesday (September 17), the 35-year-old shook the internet with the release of her first original song in over a decade, a slow-tempo jam called "When I Wasn't Watching." Much like its title suggests, Moore blindsides listeners with a long-awaited track that sounds even sweeter than "Candy." To accompany its release, the This Is Us actress also dropped the Lauren Dukoff-directed music video for her comeback.
"Myâ favorite version of me disappeared/ Through longer days and shorter years/ So where was I when this was going down?/ Assumed the world would come around," Moore sings on the soul-searching record over an easy-going groove.
âThe idea of diving back into music after so much time and personal change was really intimidating to me for a while,â Moore revealed in a statement. âBut then I finally realized: Iâm the only person who can make this move. It all has to start with me.â
"When I Wasn't Watching" is the songstress' first offering from her forthcoming album, her first in 10 years, due on Verve Forecast in early 2020. Its release comes after months of recording sessions with her husband, Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith.
âIt means so much to me because I know it means so much to her,â Goldsmith told PEOPLE of his wife. âI watch her light up as she gets to express herself again as a songwriter and singer in the way she hasnât in a long time."
